Willis was born and raised in Deshler, Nebraska, and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where he attended parochial school through the eighth grade. He attended St. John's Academy and Junior College in Winfield, Kansas, before attending Valparaiso University. During the Korean War, Willis served in the Navy Hospital Corp. attached to the Marines. Thereafter, he attended the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, and did postgraduate work at Stanford University.
Dorothy was born and raised in Utica, Nebraska, where she was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, and attended its parochial elementary and junior high school through the eighth grade before attending and graduating from the Utica Public High School. Dorothy's interest was in music and home economics, both of which she pursued at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and the University at Omaha.
While Willis and Dorothy, together with their children, made their home in Omaha, where Willis practiced his medical specialty until retirement, a principal focus of their lives was Pacific Hills Lutheran Church where Willis was very active in leadership and as an Elder, but especially in music where he sang in the Sanctuary Choir, was an Assistant Organist and was a member of the American Guild of Organists and Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. Upon retirement, Willis and Dorothy moved to Green Valley, Arizona, where they became active members of Lutheran Church of the Risen Savior. Again, Willis held a number of positions, but was especially active in serving as pianist, organist and handbell choir member, as well as singing in the choir, and being a member of the Green Valley Community Chorus for 22 years.
God took Willis to be with Him in 2013, but Dorothy and the children know that his legacy will continue as TMF begins this exciting journey.
TMF is a private foundation created by Dr. Willis P. & Dorothy L. Mundt to celebrate the blessings they received, and to serve God, consistent with their faith and values.
Approximately forty years ago, Willis and Dorothy were living in Omaha, Nebraska. They set about planning their estate. They did not know what God would ordain over the course of their lives together, but consistent with their individual and collective faith and values, they knew that God would provide for them, as He always had and did, and that they should serve Him by using for others that which He blessed them to have.
To quote Dorothy, "TMF is all about celebrating blessings received, and giving back His gifts in service to our neighbors." All neighbors. All neighbors everywhere. Thanks be to God!
